The
successful integration of composite structures into modern
architectures offers an opportunity for significant weight
reduction and improved corrosion resistance. However, the
replacement of metal structural elements with composite materials
removes much of the intrinsic electromagnetic (EM) shielding
provided by the metallic structure.
To
address this need, DLC Incorporated has developed its NanoShield™
concept, using carbon nanotubes and proprietary processing to
impart electromagnetic shielding to composite structures. This
process enables the fabrication of low-cost, high-strength
composite parts which are inherently EMI shielding. NanoShield™
composites also offer the opportunity for low observability, since
the primary shielding mode is by absorption, not reflection as
with metals and conducting materials.
This
discovery of the high shielding effect of nanotubes independent of
bulk conductivity of the composite is the key to producing
affordable, lightweight composite structure without greatly
affecting the mechanical properties of the resin system. The
result is a very effective EMI shield with low nanotube loading
and minimum composite thickness
