超音波強度常指振動子單位面積的輸出功率(W/cm2)亦稱為輸出密度或出力密度。當超音波照射在液體時,超音波為一種疏密波,超音波照射時液體中會發生正壓與負壓,正壓會使氣泡成長而負壓的現象由於不實在,負壓會將液體拉裂發生空洞,稱為空洞現象,此時發生的氣體由液體的蒸氣或溶於液體中的氣體所組成,但有時稀薄至可視為真空。此種氣泡有時被音壓壓縮而溶於液體中,若為某半徑以上的氣泡時就不會消滅。而有時氣泡在此振動中破裂發生衝擊波,會在液體中局部施加很強的衝擊力,
